Paris Art Supplies

When in Paris be sure to visit the oldest art supplier in Paris.  Gustave Sennelier began his pigment business in 1887 .  It  looks   more like a chemists shop than an art store.   It is managed by  Sennelier  family which would be happy to welcome you to their store at 3 Quai Voltaire.

Paint

There are many high quality paints on the market.  If you avoid student grade quality any brand will give you good results.  The links to the right are to brands I typically use.

Paper

The standard watercolor sheet is 22 x 30 inches and  typically comes in  3 finishes; cold press, hot press and rough.   Rough is the most textured. Cold press is the smoothest and hot press in between.

Watercolor paper also comes is blocks of 15 or 20 sheets.  A block is similar to a pad but is bound on all 4 sides.  Paper in a block does not need to be stretched before use.  It is available usually is size s of 9 x 12  to 18 x 24 inches.

The papers shown below are good quality acid free papers that are suitable for most purposes.  They can be purchased at most online dealers and larger art stores.

Brushes

Brushes can be the biggest investment in watercolor supplies.  A Kolinsky sable brush can cost over $100. There are many shapes and sizes.  In addition  hair type can include sable, ox , squirrel, goat, camel, badger and hog.  There are also a number of synthetic bristles and brushes that are a combination of natural and synthetic.

There is a brush for every artist's need and price range. You generally will be better off with fewer brushes of good quality than many cheap ones.

      Round                Flat                        Filbert                  Fan

      Mop                Rigger           Spotter

If I could only have one brush, I would choose a  round number 10 Kolinsky sable made by Arches or Isabey.   It will cost about $80.00 from online art suppliers.  A squirrel  hair brush of the same size can be found for $20.00 or less. A well cared for brush will last for years.
